Obituary of Philip Joseph Weiss

Philip "Phil" Weiss, a native of New York City, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012, at home peacefully. He was a WW II U.S. Navy veteran and a graduate of the University of Illinois, and a Tau Delta Phi fraternity member. He resided in Brooklyn and Valley Stream, N.Y. before relocating to Marlboro in 1989. Phil was a textile salesman for 40 years, retiring from Dome Textiles in 1990. He belonged to the Fabric Salesman Guild and Knights of Pythias. Volunteer service was a vital part of Phil's life, with the Boys Scouts as a Scout Master, Jewish Marriage Encounter and, locally with, Meals on Wheels, CentraState Hospital, and the PNC Arts Center. Phil served as a Trustee of Marlboro Greens for 20 years, including several terms as the community president. He was a renaissance man who researched every project tenaciously. He was the beloved husband of 60 years of Dorothy Weiss who predeceased him, adored father of Adrienne Weiss-Harrison (Andrew Harrison) and Claudia Weiss (Arthur Siegel), cherished grandfather of Mark and Rachel Harrison and Alison Hassman, loved as well by sister, Enid Ganz, and the patriarch of a large family, including many nieces and nephews. Phil was predeceased by his parents, Benjamin and Sylvia. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, August 26 at Temple Shalom, 5 Ayrmont Lane, Aberdeen, with interment to follow at Old Mount Carmel Cemetery in Queens. The family will sit Shiva Sunday, August 26, 7 to 9 p.m.; Monday, August 27: 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.; and Tuesday, August 28: 2-5 p.m. at the Weiss residence in Marlboro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Butterfly Wishes (Homeside Hospice Foundation), 67 Walnut Ave., Suite 205, Clark, NJ 07066 or The Lustgarten Foundation, 1111 Stuart Ave, Bethpage, NY 11714. Arrangements were entrusted to Freeman Funeral Homes, Manalapan.
