Obituary of Colin Monahan

Please share a memory of Colin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Colin Monahan, 28, of Freehold, passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City with his family by his side.  Born in Long Branch, New Jersey, Colin spent the first years of his life in Woking, Surrey, England. He grew up and lived in Freehold Township, attended schools in the district, and graduated from Freehold Boro High School. Colin was involved in many sports, but wrestling was his passion. He wrestled for the Colonials for 4 years and was a Captain for three. Colin won 100 matches and a District title. After high school, Colin attended Ursinus College, where he wrestled and graduated with a degree in Applied Economics. While there, he was the first recipient of the Pat Curry Award for Dedication and received the Director of Athletics Award, which is given to the student-athlete who demonstrates loyalty, perseverance, and spirit to the team and college.

Colin was a Teacher Assistant at Barkalow Middle School in Freehold Township. He was also a coach for both cross country and track and field. Colin coached wrestling for Red Bank Catholic High School since September of 2023 and, before that, at Freehold Boro High School for several years. Colin was the Assistant Coach of the Year in 2022 for both District 22 and Region 6 when he helped guide Freehold Boro to its first-ever Division Title. Colin was dedicated to his student-athletes and guided them in reaching their goals. He loved his wrestlers at both high schools and his middle school teams dearly. Colin worked tirelessly for each and every one of them.

Colin is survived by his parents, Patrick Monahan III and Suzann (Baxter) Monahan; sister Amanda Monahan-Obenchain (Chase) of Atlantic Highlands, NJ; and nephew Milo Obenchain. Colin loved his family and friends fiercely.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Sunday, October 27th, from 1 to 4 at Freeman Funeral Home, 47 East Main Street, Freehold, NJ. To leave a condolence or find directions, visit www.freemanfuneralhomes.com.
