What sad news... We have so many memories of being with Rick & Lorraine and thier beautiful daughters. Babysiting the girls in Maplewood and at the shore, helping out at the Parker Avenue home at their fabulous and fun dinner parties, listening to Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck, riding to the shore with Rick in his beloved white mustang, and seeing him working in his basement studio making signs. He always asked us about school and boyfriends...making us feel important. Seems like yesterday. We hope your memories bring you comfort and joy. We will always rmember him fondly.

Dear Lorraine and family, We were surprised and sad to read the announcement of your loss in the recent local newspaper. We still live in your old home at 228 Raymond Ave in SO. We love the house and have taken good care of it. Our two older kids are almost grown up now but we also have a 5 year old to raise so here we go, back to Marshall School again. We even have a few of Rick's things still in the garage. You are in our thoughts and our prayers. May your memories carry you during this difficult time. With sincere regards, Mary and Mario Passalacqua

Only weeks prior to his passing, we spent days down the shore, in the town where we grew up each summer. One evening, we walked to a local restaurant to order pizzas for a poolside dinner. He seemed strong and steady. The following night, we went to Seaside where he seemed almost joyous, as he reminisced. Decades ago, he had been a lifeguard during summers at Seaside.
After some rides and very unhealthy boardwalk fare, he wandered away from our chaotic group of adults and excited children. I was returning from purchasing ice cream, when I found him wandering with purpose. A phone call to Bonnie's cell phone allayed fears of him being lost, so I meandered with him. At the end of the boardwalk awaited the entrance to the sky-ride, a slow ride over the boardwalk, on a ski-lift-like chair ride. I could not have predicted how wonderful that half hour would be.
We rode high over the people, restaurants and amusement games. The sun had set to the west of us, and the sky was ablaze with color. Stars were starting to be visible. The lights on the boardwalk made the procession below seem like a show, intended for us to watch from above. He started naming places, and reminiscing about what used to be on this corner and that corner. Bowling alleys, rides, games, people. Then, we saw the upside-down, wooden lifeguard boat, and his reminiscing took on a different fervor.
As a lifeguard he saved several, witnessed the best and worst of human behavior, made friends and competed in the annual summer lifeguard contests. We laughed as he admitted that his section of Seaside only had a few lifeguards, and therefore finished dead last during each competition. When I questioned that, he paused for a moment and replied that maybe once they finished second to last.
These moments were sublime. Absolutely sublime. I took out my cellphone, and started to take photos, and then started to take some video. He brusquely asked what I was doing, but continued to ramble as I tried to capture most of the remaining moments of our unexpected flight over the bustling boardwalk below. The significance of the evening was striking to me, although I never could have predicted just how soon the significance would increase.

Sigh… Mr. Ericsson was like a second Father to us. We lived in yelling distance from our porch to their porch.. Our families did everything together.. Traveled in our campers together and even had houses next to each other down the shore. Today and always I will remember big Rick fondly. He's at peace now. Please find comfort in the many, many amazing memories and truth that we will all see each other again. You all are in our thoughts and prayers.

I knew Ricky at Columbia High School and we all had so much fun together during those three years. He was a great guy, liked by all and lots of fun. I am sorry for your loss and he will be remembered by us all in the class of '53.
