He was my Vocal Music Teacher at Thorne. I'm sorry he thought I was the only student cheating when he left us a quiz to complete in his absence. Fact is, the entire class was cheating but decided in the end to not cheat. No one told me this. So it looked like I was the only one. When he asked who else did cheat, no one said a word. He was a stellar teacher.

Jerry was one of the sweetest men you would ever want to meet. He and Sue were soulmates. Years ago I wrote the music for my eldest son to walk down the isle at his wedding. Jerry sang the music so wonderfuly.
As a brother in law, and an uncle to my children, he will be missed.

I first met Jerry in 1990 upon joining the Monmouth Civic Chorus. As a newcomer to the state of New Jersey, I immediately felt that I was joining a wonderful organization, thanks to the kindness that both Jerry and Sue extended to me. I was fortunate to observe the guiding hands of the Metz family and their lasting impact on MCC. Through the years we shared "proud parent" stories together. Jerry and Sue were so excited to share Becky's debuts . I remember caroling in a quartet with Jerry on a very cold December afternoon at Earth Treasures...the owners invited us inside to continue our songs to the delight of so many customers. Jerry loved to share his musical gift, whether in a small ensemble, as a baritone soloist , or as the leader of the bass section in MCC with much fervor! Jerry set a strong example of what one could achieve through his work ethic. Our current conductor told us he always prepared MCC rehearsals with the question, "would this plan meet Jerry's standards" in mind. This said so much to me about the influence of Jerry on so many. I know I will always think of Jerry fondly.
Jerry faced his health battle with courage, dignity and strength. These last few years have been an extra blessing to witness. Jerry, ever the teacher and leader, has shown us all how to live fully and deeply in the company of family and friends.

Let Us Sit Down in Grief
for Jerry Metz
Let us sit down in grief
and deep in gratitude
for Him we have long shared
and never quite will lose.
Teacher and schmoozer,
leader and friend,
so much, so much to say,
and yet so often listening,
demanding, hectoring,
challenging, sharing,
admiring, celebrating,
musical even in silence,
Go and google mensch,
you’ll find His picture there.
How He accepted love,
welcomed the friendly touch,
kvelled for His offspring,
cleaved to His Beloved…
As He passes,
all is gratitude,
wrapped for now
in desolation
and blessed memory.
We will hear him
We will sing him
We will embody him
We will thank him
As we carry him forward.

Like many, we came to know Jerry through music. He and Sue first joined as a family guest at Kehilat Chaverim High Holidays service, and they quickly became part of our congregation family. Deb & I cherish our time together with Jerry and Sue, and will miss Jerry greatly. Of his greatest moments - chanting Kol Nidre, and a unique recording of Jerry & Sue singing Adon Olam to Verdi. May his memory be a blessing.

One of the highlights of the music ministry at Morrisville Presbyterian Church was Jerry's singing the bass solos in Bach's cantata 79 a few years ago. Another highlight for me was his singing with Mostly Motets when we performed a Bach motet at the Guild for Early Music at the Grounds for Sculpture. Jerry, you were magnificent!

I came to know Jerry and Sue through monthly sight-reading sessions, where we would delight in lots of Renaissance polyphony and other small-ensemble pieces that Jerry, Sue, and others acquired through their long careers as choral musicians.; Jerry would supply the tonic note on his pitchpipe, and then we would be off to the races, thrilling to the heady experience that good sight-readers can have when they "have at it." Jerry had a beautiful bass voice which was always a comforting foundation, and his manner was always kind and supportive. His musicianship was always superlative. He remained brave and positive throughout his illness, which was so inspiring to me. He knew the things that brought him joy, and he did them. I know he will be missed by all of the many, many souls whose lives he touched. My condolences to Sue, Becky, and Andy. Jerry was one of the good ones. Yehi zichro baruch -- may his memory be blessed..

Though not a close friend of Jerry and his family, I knew him as a former colleague in the Middletown school system and a friend on Facebook. That’s where Jerry and I shared our mutual beliefs in politics, cultures, and gastronomy. He was a whiz at New York Times puzzles. He was a wonderful singer. He was a great cook. But most of all, Jerry was a man who loved his country almost as much as he loved his daughter and his wife. I am very, very sorry to learn of his passing. May the deep pain of his loss be soon replaced by happy memories of the life and love he shared with Sue and Rebecca. Memory eternal, we Greeks say. God bless.
