I am his step grandson, yet he is my grandfather, career idol, link and inspiration to enter engineering. He remains an inspiration for why I attend MATES, in NJ. He meant so much more to me than he knew, that's a deep regret of mine. I never really got to know him. He died as we grew closer, but his lifelong contribution towards the engineering of water and air quality show me how much of a positive force he truly was. He worked for so many years, traveled to many countries(I still have a Chinese Yuan from one of his trips), wrote books and vastly accelerated city infrastructure in the above-mentioned topics. I wish I wasn't so . I'm going to stop there; I'm still in shock so this is difficult but I am happy to have found this site and see a few more lives he has touched over he fruitful and inspirational time on this Earth with us. Love ya Pop pop

Although I didn’t work directly on projects with Rich, I had the good fortune to work for many years in the same office. Rich was a good person who valued and enjoyed life, accomplished a lot, and helped many people. He was also a serious person, an example of which was the eloquent and heartfelt eulogy that he gave at his Mother’s funeral.
Rich was a person who worked both hard and smart. He was a renowned expert who generously shared his knowledge with me and many others. I was always impressed by his recall of the key findings of past research. He was an enthusiastic and successful collaborator and traveler. He was a staunch advocate for wet weather flow research programs and funding. He was very willing to plow through bureaucratic red tape (and arrange for others to help!) to get worthwhile programs, projects or workshops approved and funded. He did not readily take “No” for an answer.
I consider myself blessed to have known Rich. He will certainly be missed, but not forgotten.
My condolences to the family.

It was my lifetime privilege to get to know Rich completing two reports for him from 1975-1980 when Rich was the Section Chief of the Storm and Combined Sewer Section of EPA. We have ever since maintained a continuing contact personally and professionally. During my low point in mid-1990s when my consulting firm employer went bankrupt and closed, Rich gave me a head up several times on job opportunity in the Urban Watershed Management Branch in EPA. Finally Rich was instrumental in getting me hired in 1999. As a junior colleague of Rich, I benefited immensely from his deep and broad professional contact and advice. On Day 1 of my reporting to work, we began to go out for lunch together almost on every day that we were in office for almost 12 years. Rich retired one year after me and we saw each other occasionally with last being about 4 months ago. Rich invited us for a backyard BBQ this summer, but the invitation never came and will not come. Rich is a very good man with good heart. He is older than I by two months and I miss him. He will be well remembered. May he rest in peace. We will meet again.

I worked with Rich at US EPA. Together for over 20 years. Rich established several achievements, including the development of the branch wet weather research plan. He built the storm water research program from one (himself) to over 20 staff. He published widely, both research results and state-of-the-art books. He developed a post-doctoral research fellow program, bringing on outstanding trainees, some of whom became staff members. He led the international stormwater research program, bringing together universities in New Jersey with those in China and Thailand; leading several research trips overseas with EPA colleagues. We were able to promote Rich to the highest EPA pay grade, based on his accomplishments, which had never been done before at EPA. He represented the agency at professional societies. And through it all, Rich remained a valued colleague, always wiling to lend a hand and being the ultimate professional. And personally, he continually applauded his family, proud of his children's accomplishments and dedicated to his wife Joan.
I remember coordinating with Rich just last month, as he prepared for a presentation at a conference in the midwest that involved an airplane flight. I was amazed that he had the energy and werewithall to travel, at our age, and told Rich that. But that was him, always contributing and adding to our knowledge base. There will never be another Rich Field. Rest in peace.

My father in law Richard always made me laugh. He knew I loved to learn words in Yiddish so he would always try and teach me. He opened up my world in so many ways. He always met Shawn and I for lunch at the most exotic of places, Thai, Indian , Malaysian and so on. I grew up in an Italian American family and had never tried any of these foods. My life is better because of my father in law. I am blessed to have known him and to be married to the wonderful son he raised.

We were at a colleague's party, Frank Freestone, and Frank had everyone trying out his kayaks. Most took a few paddles and then back to shore. Rich paddled off beyond the horizon. He came back, eventually. Rich was a bit adventurous and full of energy and enthusiasm. He brought that enthusiasm to work and to life. Tom O'C

Richard was not just a coworker to me. He was a close friend for over fifty years. We shared great times together both inside and outside the office. I will always have those memories.

It is with such a heavy heart that I write this. Mr Field, as I’ve called him since I was thirteen, although he always insisted on Richard, was such an important person in my life and all who knew him. He was kind, intelligent, super funny and a person to learn from. He called me and my friend Borsht 1 and Borscht 2 because we were of Russian descent. That stuck throughout our years of friendship. He was an amazing father, husband, grandfather and friend. A man of true integrity. Not to mention his successful career as an engineer with accolades. Words are not enough to tell how much he will be missed by all of us who knew and loved him. ❤️❤️❤️
