Eulogy:
Formal Remembrance
On September 20, 1949, on the emerald island of Montserrat in the Eastern Caribbean, a precious baby girl, Carrol Jean, became the 13th child of Pastor Nathaniel Gooding and his wonderful, caring wife Nellie. They were ardent members of the Seventh-day Adventist church (SDA) and gave their daughter a sound Seventh-day Adventist heritage.
In addition to being offered up and baptized into the SDA denomination, Carrol Jean attended Caribbean Union College (now The University of Southern Caribbean) in Port of Spain, Trinidad; Oakwood Adventist Academy in Huntsville, Alabama; and the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, New York. These educational institutions adequately prepared our Carrol Jean to serve as an effective nurse in the geriatric community at Clove Lake Nursing Home, Staten Island, New York. She had a passion for her seniors. And she was also an exceptional children’s nurse in the pediatric community at the University Hospital of Medical and Dental, Newark, New Jersey where she worked for over thirty consecutive faithful years and held the position of Nursing Manager during portions of her tenure.
In her youth, she served the SDA church as choir member in Trinidad, and as an adult, she served in the hospitality ministry as usher at Stone Mountain SDA church in Georgia
On August 17, 1975, Carrol Jean married the multi-talented Samuel R. Elscoe of Aruba, Netherlands Antilles. They had two children: Samuel R. Elscoe Jr. and Christopher R. Elscoe. They were the joy of her life.
May 19, 1976, was a troubling day for her. Amidst her excitement and jubilation, she received a critical blow. She gave birth to her first son, and he later developed Cerebral Palsy. He was given nine months to live. But although our Carrol Jean was sad and disappointed, she was undeterred. With fervent prayers… a firm faith in God… her motherly instincts… love for her child… professional training… and the support of her devoted husband and other family members, she buckled down to the crucial task of nursing the fruit of her womb. It was not easy. Albeit, instead of nine months as predicted, Samuel Elscoe Jr lived until he was twenty-eight years of age. He left the legacy of “tranquility in the human spirit”. And it was all because of the faith and attributes of his mother, Carrol Jean.
Her second son, Christopher, remembers his mother as a parent who “was always strong, stern, but fair minded (considering how much trials and tribulations life had thrown her way). She taught me life lessons like how to be strong and how to speak to people. She sacrificed a lot for me such as her time, her health, her mental well-being… all so that I could have gone to a good school and become something of myself. She put herself in inconvenience situations just to give me the life I needed. When she retired, she became soft and loving and appreciative of me. We may not have always seen eye to eye when I was growing up, but I understood all of the sacrifices she made for me. There were great times but also rough times, such as any loving relationship. She was taken from me far too early, but that will be another lesson she left… that tomorrow must never be taken for granted. So, enjoy today and make the most of it.”
Without a doubt, Carrol Jean was a loving, attentive, caring mother…She had a close bond with her children and nourished them with a gentle, yet firm hand.
She was also a dutiful wife and partner. She and Samuel enjoyed forty-eight productive and happy years of marriage. They spent quality time together and were dedicated members of the New York Antillean Association.
Carrol Jean enjoyed traveling, entertaining family and friends, dancing, music, the culinary arts, and a good hearty laugh. She accepted others with an open heart. Although she was quiet, I dare say reserved, she was very engaging and had perfected the art of active listening.
This Caribbean-born cosmopolitan woman had the honor of residing in several islands in the Eastern and Western Caribbean to include the island of Montserrat, The Commonwealth of Trinidad and Tobago, The State of St. Christopher and Nevis; St. Eustatius and St. Lucia.
She benefited from their diverse cultural experiences.
On August 12, 2023, the beloved Mrs. Carrol Jean Gooding Elscoe died at Northside Hospital in Lawrenceville, Georgia, United States of America. She leaves a host of well-wishers to celebrate her extraordinary life. They include her husband, Samuel R. Elscoe; her son, Christopher R. Elscoe; sisters Ruth Reid-Gooding, Pearl McDonald-Forbes, Myrtle Johnston-Gooding, Lucy Gooding-Sandy; brother, Dr. Earl Gooding; Surrogate aunt, Alice Elscoe and numerous close relations and friends.
She sleeps well in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. To God be the glory. Amen.

The Sage Family sends condolences to Samuel and Christopher on the passing of wife and mother, Carrol Jean Elscoe.
When we heard of Carrol’s death, we were shaken and filled with a deep sense of loss. This feeling almost enveloped us into despair. However, when we reflected on God’s unfailing love and tender kindness in her life, we rejoiced in knowing that she lived her life in accordance with His will.
We gave thanks to God that Carrol knew and served her Lord from youth. Early in her life she learned to cultivate His presence through worship, prayer, and praise. This she did faithfully.
As she received God’s unconditional love, she poured love freely to others -husband, children, family, friends and even strangers.
Her quiet spirit drew persons closer because of her ability to listen attentively and give sound advice filled with wisdom, love, and mercy. Carrol’s heart-felt warmth made friends and strangers feel like family. Just a gaze from her spoke volumes. She articulated her opinions, verbally or nonverbally, with clarity and respect so that we were clear of her position on the matter.
Mrs. Elscoe was elegance adorned with simplicity and humility. Yes, she had style, grace and more, but she rarely missed an opportunity to honor and serve God through acts of kindness and service to others.
She will be missed greatly, but her influence and fragrance live on in our memories. Yes, God blessed her and she in turn blessed her family, friends, and strangers. So, we give thanks to God for Carrol’s fragrance that perfumed our lives and reminded us of Jesus. May she rest in peace until the trumpet sounds.

Remembering Carrol Jean.
Carrol was thoughtful, kind, nurturing, and soft spoken. Her smile and her eyes were warm and welcoming.
She had a way of expressing calmness. She enjoyed having family and friends visit. She always enjoyed a good joke, and showed love & compassion to those she came in contact with.
We’re so grateful to have known such a beautiful soul, who was loving. Her friendship with our family was genuine …a true gem! That’s what I saw in her.
May she rest in Heavenly Peace and rejoice with family & friends on Resurrection.
Our heartfelt condolences to ALL families and friends.
Mr. & Mrs. NERBERT Smith & family.
