JoAnn and I met over 50 years ago while working at Pitman High School. We bonded as single independent women. We double dated at night and then worked together to solve some educational challenges. We helped each other grow. Who could as for more. JoAnn’s career took her miles away from me but we stayed connected. I will miss her.

Jo Ann was your go to - be in the fox hole with elegant lady. There was nothing that Jo Ann could or would not accomplish. Family, education, safety and well-being of the children and staff was always HER priority. The journey SHE took through life was the prime example we all should be living. We lost a soul filled with love and passion and may we keep the lessons we were taught by HER alive and cemented. From Life’s Lesson Plan – Matthew 25:23 “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Master”. I am blessed to have known this remarkable lady.

I was so sad to learn of Dr. Magistro’s passing and wish to extend my deepest sympathies to Hank and her entire family. As a teacher and member of the EBEA, I had the pleasure and privilege to know and work with Dr. Magistro when she served as Superintendent. A consummate professional, a role model, and an inspiration, Dr. Magistro embodied all the qualities that define a true leader. Her passing leaves a void in the lives of all those she touched during her years in East Brunswick. May she rest in peace.

I smile remembering the canoe trip on the Delaware during a Workshop Day, in June. We were the women who insisted on breaking the male-only end-of-year festivity. That ride was before JoAnn was married to dear Hank.

East Brunswick Schools lost another great one yesterday. Dr. Jo Ann Magistro, former Guidance Counselor, Asst Principal at EBHS, Asst Superintendent for Student Services, Asst. Superindent of HR, and, finally, Superintendent, passed suddenly. I am shocked and deeply saddened and have been trying to process this all day. She was my colleague, my boss and my friend. She was the ultimate leader, always. She was funny and charming (we did several Faculty Follies together and we were not above making fools of ourselves! We danced, we sang, we acted to raise money for scholarships). Jo Ann always put the students first but always had time to listen to her staff. She was kind and caring. I’d like to share a story to show you how great her sense of humor was, and how caring she was. I remember we had a new grading program of some kind implemented at EBHS. Jo Ann at the time was the superintendent of schools and DANIELLE RUGGIERO was in charge of human resources. It was 10 o’clock at night and I could not figure out what to do with this one part of the grading program, so I emailed both of them and I said “I’m sitting here crying and laughing. I’m crying because I can’t figure this out. I am laughing because I have both of your home phone numbers.” Joann shot an email right back to me and said “keep laughing. I’m not home! I’m still at work. Call me here!” What an example of hard work and leadership. I will miss her beautiful smile and contagious laugh. She’s with the angels now.

Dr. Magistro was my leader as a teacher and my mentor when I became a Superintendent of Schools. I personally requested her (she was not on the list to other 1st year Superintendents). She took me on when she didn't have to and helped me perform, lead, and shine. It can be lonely in the Superintendents club, but she always knew what to say and when to say it. I will always be grateful for her aa my leader while I taught in EB and for her priceless advice as my mentor.

I send my sincere condolences to the family of Dr. Jo Ann Magistro as well as all who had the privilege of knowing/working with her. I am grateful to her for the example she set for me early on in my career in education. I remember the day I met her- I was sent over to the board office in East Brunswick as a prospective hire for a teaching position at one of the elementary schools. She was the Assistant Superintendent. She asked my intriguing and thought provoking questions and seemed to really want me to know and appreciate the district (of which she was immensely proud). Her pride was contagious. She smiled at me and said "I see big things for you." She saw those "things" way before I did- Five years later, I worked in Central Office and I got to work very closely with her (she was the Superintendent of Schools at that point) and the Director of HR and the Deputy Superintendent. All strong female leaders. She always set the tone- I rarely saw her rattled. She spent time with me and asked me about my thoughts and aspirations. She loved to talk about her beautiful children and her love for her family. She gave me opportunities to learn about leadership in schools and exposed me to experiences that would propel my career in the future.
When I left the district, she stayed in touch with me and expressed her pride in my accomplishments. She was full of pride when I became a mother and she reminded me continually that I could still be an effective leader as well as a mother. I'm glad that I was able to express my gratitude to her for her demonstrations of truths over the years. I think of her often when I reflect on the qualities of insightful mentors. I am so sad to know I won't be able to look into her face and thank her for her positive impact on my life. May her family find peace in their bond together, knowing love never dies. The essence of who she was, what has been, will remain as her legacy.

I was incredibly fortunate to work for Dr. Magistro during her time as the Director of Human Resources. Dr. Magistro was unsurpassed in her dedication to East Brunswick students, staff and community members. Dr. Magistro took a chance on me - a 21-year old with little to offer but a lot of enthusiasm - and for that I owe her my career and my perpetual gratitude. Dr. Magistro will be remembered for her outstanding role as a strong leader, but also for her incredible compassion and empathy. My deepest sympathies to her family and friends. The whole EB community mourns the passing of an icon.

Dr. JoAnn Magistro was an incredible compassionate leader who shaped the educational environment of East Brunswick Schools. I was fortunate to have her as my direct supervisor when I began teaching in the district. During our time together she always spoke lovingly of her family, especially her young (at the time) son and daughter. May she rest in peace and may her family be comforted by their wonderful memories.

What more can you say about JoAnn – a beautiful lady inside and out, dedicated educator, loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was the best superintendent I ever worked for in my 37 years in education. JoAnn cared about her entire staff regardless of their roles. I had the privilege to work with her and also know her as a friend! My condolences to Hank, Henry, and Liz. The world was a better place because of this woman and she will be sadly missed!

Jo Ann was a stellar leader, a visionary, and a woman that led our district in a highly ethical manner. "We must behave in a manner that is above the law", was the phrase she used when addressing her Principals and Supervisors during our monthly meetings. Those words have always stayed with me. JoAnn believed in her staff and empowered those interested in moving forward in their careers to do so.
May you rest in peace. Your legacy will always be remembered.- Darlene Alderoty

Dear Hank, Lizzie, Henry, Jenna, and Sierra,
I am so saddened by Jo Ann's passing. I can't imagine how you all must be feeling. Thank you for sharing her with the EB community where she had a positive and profound impact on so many. I am the person I am today because of both her mentorship and her friendship. I will forever cherish the many hours that I spent by her side, often in awe of the thoughtful and insightful decisions that she made; the students and ensuring the excellence of the school district were always at the forefront. Her pride and faith in the teachers and administrators who worked with her, helped us all to be the best that we could be; we were a team and she was our fearless leader. My favorite memories...school bond referendums and budgets and watching the voting results come in, late night chats when we were too wound up to go right home after meetings, watching new schools being built and renovations taking place, attending IPLE competitions, meeting grateful former students she had counseled...there are so many. Then there are her famous sayings..."Good morning my little chickadees!" and "Let's make sure we watch the roll out!" among them. I hope I have made some of my colleagues smile with these recollections. I will miss being able to connect with Jo Ann to share the things we were both passionate about and the memories we shared. I will forever be grateful for our friendship and all that she taught me.

I was devastated to hear of Dr. Magistro’s passing. She hired me as an Assistant Principal in EB in 2007 and was a role model, mentor and dear friend.
Dr. Magistro’s leadership remains evident in EB to this day; the people she hired, the security force she developed, the schools she built - her partnership with the various members of the Board of Education was legendary.
The world lost a great female educational leader on August 18, 2023 - so many school administrators are successful today because of her guidance, knowledge and support.
