My mother was always my best friend. She was caring, supportive and kind. Growing up, we used to laugh uncontrollably at the dinner table over nothing at all. We would look at each other and start laughing, losing our breath. My mother was always there to listen to everything I wanted to share. She enjoyed being thoughtful for all occasions. For 15 years living in the same town, she would come over on Geary and my wedding anniversary with mums or a cake and card. She enjoyed giving her grandchildren the “special gift” for birthdays or Christmas like a new bicycle or American Girl Doll. One year, she bought Ella an American Girl Doll from Santa and because she couldn’t take the credit, she bought her another one for her on her birthday.
Her great joy were her grandchildren. We went apple picking or to the Monmouth County horse races and to the beach together. She loved babysitting and reading books to the kids. She was a teacher at heart. She was very good with numbers and loved playing Sudoku. She memorized everyone’s phone numbers and even when she was not well at the end, she remembered them to call us up to the day before she passed. We could play a good game of Scrabble or Boggle with my sister Donna or Ella and Parker. She was sad when we moved to South Carolina but accepted it and took the move in stride. She endured much hardship throughout her illness. She taught us the unconditional love of a mother.
