Obituary of Charles John Schmidt

Charles John Schmidt, 80, passed away on April 23, 2021 at Lake Topanemus Park in Freehold, NJ on a beautiful Spring day while taking a leisurely walk under the trees by the lake. He passed away from natural causes; quickly, in good health, without pain, and with family and fellow church members beside him.

Born in Queens, New York in 1940, he was the son of Alfred and Catherine Schmidt, the second born of seven children. He was employed at Wehrle's Bus Service for 48 years where he safely transported generations of children. In all his years of employment, he only missed a half day of work for when his eldest son was born. Affectionately known as 'Chuck' on his school bus, he took care to learn the names of the children on his bus, took interest in their lives, and insured they saw a smiling face each morning and afternoon. 

He was a faithful member of Abundant Life Church of God for 27 years. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his four children, both in their youth and adulthood. He will be remembered for his tender kindness, enduring faithfulness, and beautiful commitment to his faith in Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his partner Karen McHugh, his daughter Sarah and husband Gary, his eldest son CJ, Andrew and his wife Leanne and Matthew and his wife Ashley; his grandchildren Gavin, Caden, and Matthew; and his sisters, Marilynn, Margaret, Francis, and Laura (Allen). He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Catherine, and his brothers, Alfred and Billy.

The viewing will be held on Friday April 30^th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. At Abundant Life Church with the funeral service following directly after. Internment will be at Shoreland Memorial Gardens in Hazlet.
