Obituary of Vito Daniel Damiano

Please share a memory of Vito to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Vito Daniel Damiano, 85, of Toms River, NJ, formerly of Manalapan, passed away on January 25th after a long battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease that he managed with dignity and determination. Vito is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years Inge (Beimler); daughter Carol Suarez; son Paul Damiano and daughter-in-law Kathleen; granddaughter Kristen Calhoun and her husband Jon; grandson Daniel Suarez and his wife Alyssa; granddaughter Shannon Damiano ; great-grandson Julian Calhoun;  twin brother Joseph Damiano; niece Laura Anderson, nephews Stephen Damiano and Michael  Damiano and many friends. He was pre-deceased by his sister-in-law Dottie Damiano and son-in-law John Suarez and many friends.

Vito was born in Little Italy, NYC on August 14th, 1935, to Rosa (Nardiello) and Rocco Damiano, emigres from Ruoti, Italy. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy High School and the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. Vito served in the U.S. Army 4th Armored Division in peacetime Germany where he met his future wife. He later attended the Mechanics Institute, and worked for Meyer Strong and Jones and the URS Company, Inc. in NYC  as a mechanical engineer; working his way up from the blueprint room to manager of the mechanical engineering department. He was especially  proud of his work on the Javits Convention Center, the old Yankee Stadium, Penn Station and the Washington DC subway system.

Vito  played bridge every lunch hour and went to church every Sunday (almost). He  enjoyed bowling leagues, house parties with friends (especially with a night at the races),  travel and cruises. He loved golfing, opening presents , a three hour dinner , the Yankees and his most of all his family.  His favorite stories included  growing up on 33rd and 3rd (use your New York accent)  and  five guys driving a jeep down the  Champs Elysees.   He was always ready to lend a helping hand and his easy demeanor and quiet and steady guidance  will be missed.

A service will be held at Freeman’s Funeral Home in Manalapan Friday, January 29th from 9 am to 11 am, interment directly following at St Rose of Lima Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease research in Vito’s memory.
