I remember being little, and feeling so lucky to have Mrs. Hemmendinger as our neighbor. She was so friendly and welcoming to our entire (unusually large) family. I specifically remember going over to her house on a hot summer day with my mom (Gloria) and my brother, David. She greeted us with a smile, snacks and let us swim in the pool! I knew from an early age how lucky my mom was to have such a wonderful friend in Mrs. Hemmendinger. My mom and her would talk daily on the phone. Mrs. Hemmendinger politely asking, “Hi honey, is your mother there?” And my mom, ending each conversation with , “I’ll let you go, Ro!” (My sister and I still do this after our talks!) NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY knew the art of the PBJ like Mrs Hemmendinger! PIcaso of the PBJ...I am might add. I would secretly lose EVERY backyard Wiffle Ball game as quickly as possible in an effort to gain access to the coveted Hemmendinger kitchen table in order to savor the sweetness of that Smuckers Strawberry Jam so evenly dispersed across that Pepperidge Farm bread then artistically blended with Skippy Smooth (ok, sometimes but seldom Crunchy). Here's to you Mrs. Hemmendinger... Thank you for these and so many more memories so wonderful and so vivid. Much Love and Respect, Rolly
