Obituary of Don McCann
Please share a memory of Don to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Donald "Don" F. McCann, 71, passed from this world May 31, 2014 in Chambersburg, PA, surrounded by his children. Born in Manhattan, he graduated from Nutley High School and joined the U.S. Air Force from 1961-1965. He received his BA in English from College of Emporia in Kansas in 1971, becoming the first college graduate in his family. He met his good friend, David B. Stein at college and they would remain friends for life. Don worked in insurance in NYC and it was there he met and married Kathleen Bergin and they raised three children in Freehold. Don was a lifelong fan of the NY Yankees and Giants. He loved to watch the games with family, friends and food, and could recite scores and plays from games that occurred decades ago. Don was an avid reader as well, averaging a novel per week that he read on his bus ride from Freehold to NYC. Watching silly movies with his kids was also a favorite pastime. Don will be most remembered by those whose lives he touched with his great kindness and sense of humor. His smile and big blue eyes lit up his whole face, looking a bit like Santa Claus when he grew his beard.
Don will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. He was predeceased by his parents, Don and Dorothy McCann. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Nora and Tom Rogers and their children, Emma and Helena; Monica McCann; and Owen and Kelly McCann;former wife, Kathleen Bergin; and lifelong friend, David Stein.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering on Sunday, June 22nd, from 12 noon until the memorial service at 1:30 pm, at Freeman Funeral Home, 47 East Main Street, Freehold. To share a photo or memory or find directions visit www.freemanfuneralhomes.com
