When we spent Christmas with the McAteers it was always fun. The one memory that pops up is between Michael, my father and myself. Michael was standing behind the bar and I went over to talk to him. He says what to want to drink. I was a teenager so I didn't know any alcoholic drinks, besides beer. I said I don't know, Michael suggested a Brandy Alexander. All during this my father, unknown to Michael and I, was watching and told Michael if he gave me alcohol he would make him regret it. After hearing this Michael and I just burst into laughter.

Mike and I first met in 1966 when his Uncle Gene got him and I after-school jobs at Merrill Lynch. We hit it off immediately. Of course, I do not know of someone he didn't hit it off with.He was truly the best friend I ever had and the memories of the fun and good times we had will be with me forever. As "they" say :"I could write a book".With Mike, what you saw was what you got,and that was awesome. While he passed far too young, those of us who knew him are truly fortunate for the time we had.To Pat and family I am so sorry for your loss and may the knowledge of his love for you sustain you in this time of grief.

To the McAteer family. I knew Mike on and off the floor for over 30 years at the NYSE. Always laughs and great shares about everything. Last 10 years on the phone and on Facebook. Will miss him a lot and always grateful that I knew him as I did; one very nice guy in so many ways. Will always remember him. My heartfelt sympathy to all in his family. My thoughts and prayers with you continuously. Rest in Peace Mike.

Everyone who sees this title knows exactly what I mean. Mike would walk into a store for the first time and by the time he walked out, him and the clerk would be on each others Christmas Card lists. He loved to talk, but not just to talk. He loved to meet and get to know people. His gregariousness was something I have always tried to emulate when I meet people.
I do not think of loss, I remember how fortunate I am to know him.
I remember him wanting to go fishing with me (13 years old) when he came down to Florida to visit my brother Larry.
I remember 30+ years later when we were in Jersey for a family reunion and could not find a hotel. On a Saturday night at 10 pm we called him out of the blue. Thirty minutes later he met us and brought us back to his house. There was never a thought in our mind that we inconvenienced him or Pat because of the way he greeted us. We felt SO welcome.
And I remember and cherish the laughter.
Rest now Mike. Make heaven laugh!

When you work in a place like we did at the NYSE for 30 or 40 years the bond we felt was as strong as a family. Our word or a nod or a handshake was our bond. Since most of us spent more time there and commuting, we saw more of each other than we saw of our families. That is why our relationships with each other was so strong. Mike was a HUGE part of that.
He had the greatest personality, was kind to everyone and was loved by everyone. I will always treasure my 34 years at the NYSE and because of men like Mike everyone of us who worked there would never change a minute of it. I, like Mike and all the other lucky people who worked at this HOME had 2 families and were damn lucky to have them. To Mike's NYSE family we will miss one of our own but he was at the top of our list as far as that family was.
To Mike's real family: No words that I or anyone can say could ever fill the void, heal the pain, or lessen the loss that you feel. Just keep in mind that God loaned you a great man for many years that was loved by so many forhis kindness, humility, his huge smile, his big heart and his friendship.
To all who met and loved Mike------
Please don't remember how he died, Remember how he lived. He was an inspiration to all of us. It my pleasure to call him my FRIEND

May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. And rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

Knowing Michael from growing up in Red Hook, there was a special love he had for others and especially his family. Playing baseball on the cobblestone streets was fun to watch--I never did get to play with the big league too much-I got to watch and hope I would grow a little. Michael loved to play. As we got older, he took so much pride in his beautiful children. And always his love for Pat and his brothers. Michael--I am really going to miss you!

The first time I met Michael was on the phone, first day at F & R upstairs office, 3.30.81. I picked up the phone he said "you must be the new broad" while I was still sputtering, he said "welcome aboard" and welcome he did. He was my tour guide, in a magical kingdom called Wall Street, by which we meant "the Floor". He was the one I called with a myriad of questions, or to cry on his shoulder or when I needed a laugh or a hug. He called me Bubbles. I was blessed to call him a friend. My heartfelt condolences to Pat, Kathleen, Kristen and Michael, he was over the moon when you were born and so proud.

Mike was always upbeat and funny. Talking about his children and how proud he was of them. We would compare stories of our children together and would always find a funny side to the the story. We would laugh and enjoy away some long days on the floor. You will be missed brother.

To The McAteer Family, I will truly miss my dear sweet cousin Michael. He was not only a great cousin, but a great person! He was always a connection to my dad for me and I enjoyed his stories of their times together. I know you will always have countless memories of what a great dad, husband and brother he was. I adored him and will miss him dearly. I will keep those stories and memories close to my heart to remember how lucky I was to have him as my cousin. Love to All! xoxo Loriann
