Jimmie L. Smith, 81, of Marlboro
Jimmie Smith (also known as J.L. or Jim) passed away peacefully on October 22, 2016 at home.
Born in Des Moines, Iowa to Dorothy E. (Kinney) Smith and Leonard E. Smith, he later lived in Missouri, upstate New York and Wisconsin, before settling in Marlboro 46 years ago. Jim was a pilot in the United States Air Force and later was employed in corporate aviation as Chief Pilot for M.P. McLean Securities, New York City.
After high school he attended Lawrence College in Appleton, WI. He was a proud member of the United States Air Force Academy's first graduating class of 1959 in Colorado Springs, CO. His family later owned a summer cottage for 37 years on the Chain o' Lakes in King, WI.
He was commissioned as an Air Force Officer and received his flight training at Bartow Air Force Base, FL, and Laredo Air Force Base, TX. where he met his future wife, Lt. Anne Binder They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in July. Jim enjoyed flying, golf, boating, water skiing, fishing, international travel, crossword puzzles, writing poetry and prose, chess, playing the piano and guitar, and the Green Bay Packers.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy and Dr. Leonard Smith, his infant son Terry and his son-in-law, Wayne Connelly.
Jimmie is survived by his loving wife Anne, son Timothy and wife Andrea, daughters Marita Connelly, Jan Marie Durning and husband Anthony, brother Larry and wife Annetta, grandchildren Alexander, Carly, Michael, Kayleigh and Keaton, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation was Tuesday, October 25 from 10:00 a.m.. to 12:00 p.m. at Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, 344 Route 9 North, Manalapan. The funeral service was held at the funeral home at 12:00 p.m. During the military ceremony by the United States Air Force honor guard from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, taps were played, which was a highlight of the committal services.
