I took private & classroom lessons with Elaine. What I remember about her in the classroom is that she always played the Pachelbel Canon. This music is very tranquil and relaxing. One day, on the spur of the moment, I dropped in at 'Around The Corner', which is the new place where she was teaching. I told her that sometimes I was having a problem choosing colors. She thought for a moment and said, "Art, it's like shopping for shoes. You"ll know it when you see them." This was her way of letting me figure out that what she meant was that it is instinct. Sometimes, even now when I am painting, I play the Pachelbel Canon and remember her walking around the classroom giving instructions and demonstrating a shape I was having a problem with. My thoughts are with her family now and I will continue to listen to the pachelbel canon when I paint.

Connie Murphy, cousin posted a condolence

I am Elaine's cousin Connie Murphy and I would like to share my memory of my last visit with Elaine, her daughter Mary and lovely Amy. The three visitors came to see us because Elaine wanted to visit her Uncle Robert, my father Robert Murphy. Not only was my Dad Uncle to Elaine but God-father as well and it was time for all of us to be togeher. Our visit was racked with pulling together memories and facts of what I would consider to be the Freehold days. Mary was the catalyst of asking many, many questions of my Dad and with the help of Elaine they pieced together stories and the such that makes up a family, facts and legends. My personal favorite little piece of life they brought forward was the name of the dog my Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop, our grandparents had, " Roxy". How appropriate for the time, the 1920' or 30's, silly of me I know but I loved it. Especially fun was hearing many things about the Smith side of the family and how much they too behold those warm days of our youths. It was such a great visit, so meaningful and so kind of the three of them to take the time to do, I remember it fondly and I know it meant so much to Elaine and my father. Thank you Elaine for being a wonderful matriarch cousin to all of us Murphy's. We love you and as your Uncle Robert would say' " God love ya".
Love,
Constance Jane Murphy ( cousin to Elaine )

My sincerest sympathy to the family of my dear friend, Elaine. She was such a talented, giving woman. To know Elaine was to enjoy a warm cheerful being who always had time to talk art and family. The local art community has lost a shining member and she will be greatly missed. My love to all her family at this time of great sadness.
